What wood you play? Gorgeous wooden toys from ASDA!

Wooden toys.  They look so beautiful, don't they?  I remember when I was pregnant with Ethan that I was dead set against plastic-y, garish and noisy modern toys.  I loved the idea of Ethan playing with wooden toys, found objects (putting a basket of random house stuff like material, wooden spoons, measuring cups etc together) and my old toys from my childhood.

In reality?  Yes, there have been a fair few new plastic toys.  It wouldn't be normal or fair to deprive him of them.  Also, there are may occasions where he has been given such toys by friends and family.  I cannot deny that if I've found them not being played with they have been quickly given to charity.. but overall, both my boys have a balance of plastic and wooden toys.

A principal I do like to stick to is quality.  I think it's all too easy to fill your house with plastic tat.  The kind of thing you find in the pound shop or get in cracker or party bag.  I try where possible to only get things that will last.  This is mostly because I don't like waste!  I hate thinking of landfills full of crap.  Quality doesn't always mean expensive.  I happily buy second hand.  I look around for a bargain.  You can find quality in both wooden and plastic toys.

And yet... I still prefer the wood.  What is it about wood then?  It's nice to handle, I feel.  Softer.  Warmer.  I like that if a wooden toy gets a bit bashed about it seems to add character whereas a bashed about plastic toy just seems to end up, well, broken!  When plastic breaks it leads to nasty jagged edges.  Wood mostly dents.

I do like that with wooden toys you don't tend to get sound-effects provided.  The boys create their own.  Whether it's chooo-chooo-ing for the wooden train set or making the noise of the steam from a wooden coffee machine, it's imaginative play.

I was contacted by Asda recently, asking if I knew about their range of wooden toys and if we would like to review one.  As we were in the throws of moving house I thought it best we pick something fairly small.  I had a new (second hand, handmade by my friend) wooden toy kitchen that I was keeping in the garage, intending it to go in our playroom when we moved house so I thought the boys would enjoy something that would go with that.  There were fair few cooking/kitchen/tea set toys to choose from but I plumped for a breakfast set which included two slices of bread, a toaster, a plate, jam, marmalade, a knife, butter and a butter dish.

As soon as we were set up in our new house and had a chance to get the playroom together, I showed the boys the set and they were excited to get playing.  I moved the toy kitchen into the playroom and then we set up all the bits I had for it including the breakfast set.  The boys then set to playing!

What did I notice about the toy?  Well, the packaging was good.  It was well packaged inside, secure, nicely wrapped.  The price was amazing.  All of the Asda wooden toys are a fantastic price.  The breakfast set is lovely to handle.  The wood is smooth but sturdy.  It's been played with for a  few weeks now and there have been no breakages.  I asked Ethan what he liked about it in particular.  He told me "I love how the toast pops up from the toaster! It feels real!".  Now, that's a genuine quote from him!   I have to agree though, it's a great fun action.

Felix loves the little jam and marmalade pots.  He plays slightly differently to Ethan.  Not surprising, Ethan is 6 and Felix is 2.  Felix likes to pretend the strawberry jam is "strawberry juice" and I'm forever being presented with a "bottle of strawberry juice".  He enjoys the butter as well (the slices of butter stick together with Velcro) though he insists it's cheese!

No matter what the boys are doing with it, there is no doubt that they are fueling their imaginations.  I love toys that imitate life.  Chores that are mundane to us are exciting and intriguing to our children and it's lovely to have a way for them to mimic us safely.  There are few things more heartwarming to me than to hear my boys playing nicely.  Hearing them serving food up in their kitchen, munching on pretend toast.  It's wonderful.  At least when they are playing with wooden toys I know the only thing that is going to "run out" is their energy, not batteries!  Good all round for everyone.  Also, I have to say kudos to Asda for using a very handsome young chap with luscious hair in their catalog photos for this toy!  Unisex toy win!

The wooden toy range starts from £5 and includes everything from dolls house accessories to balance bikes to outdoor play equipment!

Trendy Thursday - one day late!

What a week we have had here.... last week was half term, which was nice in but very busy and I had very little time for the blog.  This week I was looking forward to getting back to normal, but of course, life is never so simple.

On Saturday night Felix woke during the night with a raging temperature of 40 and a fractious night and day followed.  Come Sunday evening, Ethan was showing symptoms as well.  Both boys have spent the week seeming to get better and then go downhill again.  Yesterday I sent Ethan back to school because his temp had stayed down and he seemed perky.  However, at lunchtime I received a call from school asking if I could collect him (thank goodness I don't work!) because he was lying down in the playground and feeling ill.  Poor sausage.

I collected him straight away in the car (dragging a moaning and also poorly Felix with me) and we drove home.  As we parked up on the driveway Ethan started moaning and groaning, clutching at his chest and saying "My body! My body! I feel SO poorly! It hurts!".  As you know, being a Mum, I could tell straight away that he was going to be sick so I dashed out of the front of the car to his side and offered him my hands - what else had I?  He proceeded to projectile vomit all over himself and the car.  My hands didn't help in the least.  I couldn't believe the mess!!!  I had to strip him down, wash him off, wash the car.  Even his lunch box and book bag got covered!  It took me an hour and a half to clean up.   Suffice to say that at this point, a Trendy Thursday post was out of the question.

The rest of the day passed quickly in a blur of caring for the boys.  Thank goodness my parents have taken them both for a few hours today so now I have some time.. and boy am I busy!

I know it's a day late and probably won't attract as much attention as it should, but I didn't want to miss out so here is this week's Trendy Thursday.  Not a huge amount to showcase, due to the illness!!

Ethan did a little dressing up as "Princess Ethan":

I have some rather gorgeous finds to share with you now.  If you follow in Instagram you've probably already seen them, but I want to show them off here too.  First up, this beautiful sleeping bag from The Bright Company.  They have had their bedwear reduced this week so I had to take advantage of that.  This bag is 6-18 months and is beautiful.  I wish it were a little bigger so it would last longer but really, it's just so fantastic!  I love Bright Company patterns.

How about Felix's cot sheet?  Amazing isn't it!  This is from Candy Kirkby Designs and I'm afraid it cost me rather a lot to purchase and import but honestly, it is something special! I think it's my favourite of his sheets.  As he's in a sleeping bag and not using a duvet, I like to have something cute in there.

How about the Kit Cat Klock on the wall?  We have a black Kitty Cat Klock at the bottom of our stairs and Felix has been obsessed with it since birth.  One of his first words was clock and he loves to stare at "CaT CloCK" (caps for emphasis!) as Felix calls it.  We used some of his birthday money to get one for his room and it makes him grin every day.  I purchased it from a rather lovely eBay seller who imports them - they are quite hard to come by in the UK and he is one of the nicest most helpful eBay sellers I've ever "met".  We had some trouble hanging the clock and getting it to work due to the walls in our house being wonky and I also dropped the tail.  Totally my fault but he has sourced a replacement tail for me for no extra cost.  That's customer service folks!

Have you heard about Studio Escargot?  Apart from having a rather wonderful name, they, or rather Sophia makes the most beautiful dolls you have ever seen.. They are truly beautiful.  She recently shared a picture of a Unicorn she had made on Instagram and I just knew we had to have one.  I had to wait a few weeks because she was so busy, but our Unicorn arrived this morning and he was totally worth the wait.  Felix is a little too young to play with him carefully enough yet, so for now, he's sitting on his shelf looking after the books.  He's gorgeous!

A couple of weeks ago on Etsy I came across Velveteen Babies.  I am such a fan of this shop.  I want everything that Coral makes.  I bought two of her cute speech bubbles, one for each of my boys, with their nicknames on.  I also purchased a Superhero and Sidekick mask set for Ethan and Gloworm to play with.  I think Coral's items are fantastically priced for handmade original items and I may just have commissioned her to make a little something for Father's Day!

Finally, I have one more shop to share.  I found this lovely shop on Folksy this week.  I buy quite a lot of clothes for the boys from America because they seem so ahead of the trends with their fabric choices.  It's harder to find SUPER trendy handmade clothes in the UK so when I do I get VERY excited because of course it means no risk of import tax!  This lovely shop is called Marmalade Sky Baby and features clothing and accessories for babies and children made by the very cool Sarah.  She describes her stock as "Fun, stylish gender neutral baby clothes" so she's totally up my street!  I found it very hard to pick what to buy but  decided upon a cap and an infinity scarf because the boys will get years of use from these:

Right - I think I have shared enough with you lovely lot for now!  It's over to you - what have your little fashion monkeys been rocking? Have you found any cool new shops?  Link up below and don't forget to share the love, comment here, comment on others, tweet links.  You know the drill!!

Have a gorgeous weekend folks - I'm off to The South West Blog Social in Exeter tomorrow! Woot! A day out BY MYSELF!!! Coffee.. coffee.. COFFEE!!

Where has my Mummy style gone?

I don't seem to have done very much blogging about my style and clothes lately.  Of course, it's not that I haven't been bothering with what I wear, I have.  I still plan my outfits the day before (after checking the forecast of course!!) and I still like wearing lovely bright colours and patterns and putting my make up on.  For some reason though, the blog has been more about the boys and the house over the last few weeks....

So.. time for a long over due post on what I've been wearing!

It was my birthday last week and I treated myself to some new footwear - some shoes I've been lusting over for many months now.  With summer around the corner (I hope!) these were the perfect new purchases, some Saltwater Sandals and some Sunjellies! Yay!

Sunsan Saltwater Sandals Sunjellies
Sun-san Saltwater Sandals and Sunjellies
I'm enjoying wearing both pairs.  They are very comfy and don't need wearing in either (well, not for me).  If you do find them uncomfortable, Sun-San recommend wetting your Saltwaters and then wearing them so they mould to your feet.

Clothing wise, I've picked up some really fantastic items in Asda lately.  Their range improves constantly and gets updated on what seems like a weekly basis, sometimes even more frequently! It's really hard not to pick something up when I pop in there, especially as it's close to Ethan's school and we're always in need of more milk or bananas.

The denim pinafore was a total impulse buy.  There was just one there in my size, it was hanging all by itself in amongst some other dresses and it just jumped into my basket. Ehem.  Anyway, I'm glad I got it, it's really cute!

The cherry blossom dress I bought online and I love it.  The print and material are really pretty.  It's quite short but is fine with tights and looks best worn with a thick waist belt.

I'm going to link up with Momma In FlipFlops for Real Mom Style and Transatlantic Blonde for What I Wore Wednesday.

Sleeping in style - obsessed with bedding

If I ever want to freshen up one of our bedrooms, I start with a new duvet set.  I am rather addicted to them.  Luckily we have a large airing cupboard and under-bed storage so I am able to store quite a few.  We probably have too many, but at least we have plenty of bedding available for guests or when the children are sick (or have an accident!!).

I love how you can keep your room fashionable with something as simple as changing the bedding.  You can suit the season, your mood and for such a small cost.  What is even more fantastic is that it is so easy to pick up bargain bedding these days.  Whilst I really love buying from smaller independent companies, I am also a bargain hunter.  These days I have to admit that the supermarkets are the places to go for bedding.  In particular, George at Asda are brilliant at staying on trend and affordable.  You can often pick up a new duvet set for around £12.  Fitted sheets come in at around £5 so for less than £20 you can have a completely new set!

I thought I would share my top 5 places to buy bedding and some of my favourite picks from their current collections:

1) George at Asda

George are excellent at staying on trend, their prices are hard to beat and the quality is actually very good:

Duvet covers from George at Asda, Geo, Monochrome, Medicated Follower of Fashion
Bedding from George at Asda

2) Ikea

Ikea bedding makes my palms sweaty.  When I visit Ikea my heart rate increases once we reach the bedroom part of the showroom.  I find it very hard not to buy bedding when I go to Ikea.  Good prices, some are crazy cheap, most are average prices.  The quality is astounding though:

Ikea bedding covers. Monochrome. Geometric. Medicated Follower of Fashion. Bedding.

3) Wilkinsons

Wilkinsons were a real surprise to me.  I hardly ever go in "bargain" shops like Wilkos, I always think it's a little like a 99p shop.  However, I ended up on their online shop a few months ago and was astounded at the choice. Like Asda, their bedding prices are amazing and very up to date:

Wilko Wilkinsons bedding, duvet covers, Medicated Follower of Fashion, Monochrome, Geometric
Wilko Bedding

4) H&M

I started shopping online with H&M a few years ago when I discovered just how good their children's clothes are.  I love them for me and the boys.  Even hubby relies on them for their underwear!!  Their homewear range is growing all the time and is very stylish.  Their bedding sets are fantastic and often sell out within hours (anyone who knows about their very Mini Rodini style tiger bedding set will know what I mean.  I actually feel like crying when I think about missing out on that..).  Prices are very good and quality is also great:

H&M Bedding, duvet covers, trendy, monochrome, Aztec, geometric
H&M Bedding

5) Argos

I stopped buying from Argos a while ago feeling they were very old fashioned and out of date.  However, a recent Google for geometric bedding led me back to them and boy do they have a good selection!  Prices range from the very cheap to the much more expensive so there's something for everyone.  I'm impressed!

How do you like to brighten up your bedroom?  I hope I've inspired a few people today to try some new bedding out and maybe try somewhere new to buy from! Have fun!!

Complimentary Autumn Shades

The reason for today's blog post title is twofold.  First of all, the colours in this outfit are very Autumnal and compliment each other well.  The second is that when in this outfit I received a compliment from a complete stranger which was lovely and unexpected!  So.. Let me introduce you to my "Complimentary Autumn Shades"!

Vest - H&M (last year)
Cardigan - George @ Asda - current season
Jeans - F&F @ Tesco - current season
Socks - H&M (old)
Uggs - 2009 old school classics!
Jewellery - all Stella & Dot

I loved this outfit.  Ohhhh... it was so happy making!  Some of my favourite colours (I know, all us style bloggers seem to go crazy over mustard, but how can you not?!).  Mustard jeans teamed with a rust coloured baggy cardi.  Mmmmmm!  It was slouchy in the right places, comfy, especially worn with Uggs, and warm to keep out the Autumnal chill that's now in the air.  My Stella & Dot jewels look fantastic with this look I think, they glam it up a bit.  I was stood in Superdrug moaning about the fact that the toothpaste we buy is never on offer when this lady stopped next to me, touched my arm and said "those colours you are wearing are absolutely beautiful".  Well, I was grinning from ear to ear.  It's so lovely to get a compliment, especially from a stranger.  Really made my day.

Have you ever got a compliment from a stranger?

Trendy Toddler Tuesday - Toy Story & Katvig

Ahhhhhhh, Trendy Toddler Tuesday, how I love you!  Enabling me to showcase Ethan's clothes each week... bliss!!! The terrible thing is that because Ethan has a larger wardrobe of outfits than hubby and I put together (OK.. well, maybe not quite, I do have A LOT as well..) it's usually quite easy for me to show off a different outfit each week!

This week Ethan is stylin' something you won't see very often on him - at least not at the moment (when he has more say in what he wears, this may change!) - a branded character top.

In the last month or so Ethan has really got into the Toy Story films.  When he managed to do his first poop in the potty a few weeks ago I got him a Slinky Dog as a prize.  Now, if he or I spot anything with Toy Story on it when we're shopping, our eyes are drawn to it.  I'm not one for having too many character things though.  It can be a bit samey and boring.  But.. when you see your child's eyes light up in glee because they're sporting their favourite character on their top, you just can't help yourself!

I was in a charity shop a few weeks ago when I spotted a Toy Story top (originally George at Asda) for 79p.  Bargain!  It was in excellent condition and I knew it would make a brilliant "poo bag prize" for Ethan (can't carry on giving out £16 slinky dogs for every poo!!).  I bought it and after a week or so Ethan earned enough poo stickers on his chart and chose it as a prize.  So, let me introduce the very proud little man!

T Shirt - British Heart Foundation Charity Shop (originally George at Asda) 79p
Shorts - Katvig (via bebaboo.com) £12.90
Wellies - E-Leclerc supermarket, France

I love the Katvig shorts.  This was their first outing.  I featured them before in a TTT.  Ethan enjoyed wearing them, they look very unusual.  Love them!! A shout out to Bebaboo.com of course, where I got them.. still love shopping there for him!
