Me&i - Ethical Scandi clothing for women and kids!

Hello everyone! Are you there? It's been a very long time.  To be honest, I thought I'd given up blogging, but a couple of weeks ago I was chatting with Amber who writes over at Meet The Wildes and, after showering me with compliments (still getting my head around that!) she begged me, and I do mean begged me, to start blogging again.  I admitted that I had been thinking about it because I do actually have something I'd like to share on this platform once again and so I agreed I would.  So.  Here we are.   Amber, this is for you!

In just a few short days, my youngest little man heads off to school.  Yikes! This means that I have time to work now.  Proper time.  This time a year ago I tried looking for work but finding something I want to do (yes, I'm lucky enough to be able to wait for something I want to do rather than have to do anything) that fitted around preschool and school hours was nigh on impossible.  I started freelance writing, I started doing a lot of creative writing.  I volunteered in a charity shop.  But I didn't feel like blogging.  However, back in July I decided that I wanted to take the plunge and become a consultant for me&i.   Me&i are a Swedish ethical clothing company who make wonderful (as you'd expect from a Scandi brand) bright and bold clothes for women and kids.  My love affair with Scandi style started over 8 years ago now, when I was pregnant with Ethan.  That's pretty much how this blog came about too.  I loved Scandi clothes, which were hard to get hold of and very unusual where I live 8 years ago so I decided to record our outfits and write about them here.  When I heard about me&i they seemed like a perfect fit for me.  I thought, why not?  No one else is working for me&i in my town.  People like my style and my boys style.  They are always stopping me to inquire about our clothes.  Why not?

Me&i release two collections a year, Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter.  They don't create a vast range, they concentrate on quality over quantity.  Their focus is on quality materials and fair pay for workers.  They use Oeko-Tex material and factories in Turkey and Portugal.  They visit the factories they use and stipulate that the employees must be able to live on the wages they make.  As a result, you can't expect Primark prices from me&i.  But I think more and more of us are getting switched on to the idea that you get what you pay for.  We'd all rather a fairer world for all.  Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a bit of a bargain but I do like to shop as consciously as I can afford and I know I'm not alone in that.  I like to buy a few more expensive purchases each season and pepper them with my charity and eBay bargains!

Me&i Scandi Ethical Clothing AW17

As well as their ethical credentials, the clothes are comfy, soft and practical without forgoing style.  Pockets in dresses.  Cuffs on sleeves that fold up or down to allow longer wear.  Seamless socks.  The kids clothes go up to age 14 so many women find they can fit themselves into the kids collection too!

You're probably wondering how it works?  Well, you can buy online via their website, but it's much more exciting if you get in touch with a local consultant and they bring their collection to you.  Even more fun if you get friends to come over too, then it's like going shopping with friends, no kids in tow!  You know, like when you were 13 in those communal changing rooms in Miss Selfridge.  Except without the overpowering smell of Impulse and the risk of slipping over on an abandoned copy of Sugar or Just17.  Plus.  Have it on a evening and add in wine.  Sweeeet! Can you tell I'm excited?  Well, I am one of those consultants now.  I have the entire collection in my home and anyone who wants to can buy via me!  Even you! Yes, YOU, right there, on your phone.  If you're nearby (North Somerset/Bristol) I can cart my collection over for your perusal!

Me&i Scandi Ethical Clothing AW17

If you aren't nearby but you still love the clothes, I can still be your consultant, I can place an order for you.  Or you can order via the website and select me (Alexandra Bridger) as your consultant at checkout.  It's that easy! If you still want your own party, I can put you in touch with your nearest consultant too.

Personally, I feel the clothes speak for themselves.  They look lovely on hangers, they look even better on a person!  They pop in photos but once you see them in the flesh, you really get it.  Just feeling how soft they are, how they have so much give in them.  Seeing how they fit on a real body.  They really are exceptional!

Well. There we have it, my first blog post in an age.  It's good to be back.  Now I'll have to spruce up the blog, maybe even move over to Wordpress at last!  I hope people will read again, I have missed many aspects of my blog, especially my fellow bloggers and readers! Thank you, anyone who is still there!

Christmas jumpers.. of course!

I couldn't really write a fashion piece at this time of year and not mention the old Christmas Jumper, could I? How long is it since they've been back in fashion now?  Seems it's been quite a while.  I know it was ironic to start with but I think it's gone beyond that now, and to be honest, I think we should just admit that most of us just love the chance to fling on some cheesy chic.  Am I right?

We do love a Christmas jumper in our house.  Pete only had one, which I bought him a few years ago, and he lamented recently that he liked the look of a geeky one he'd seen online (a Street Fighter one if you wanted to know!) but it was over £25 and he just couldn't justify it.  Well, it got me thinking.  Why not get him one for Christmas but give it to him early so we could all "enjoy" it well before the big day.  So I did.  And I think he was extremely happy to find it waiting for him after a long day at work one day.  He's hardly taken it off since!!

I have quite a few Christmas jumpers, t-shirts and dresses myself.  Even tights.  The boys really have heaps of stuff though.  They both have an actual "Christmas section" in their wardrobes.  I love seeing them wear the clothes each year.  I do add to them each year too and of course, they grow out of things.  Though I have to say that we have quite a bit of Smafolk and DUNS Christmas wear and it just goes on and on.  Ethan has a beautiful Smafolk top he's been wearing for 4 Christmases now.

I don't think many of us don't go in for festive wear these days, but just in case, I'll post the question.  Do you go in for the cheesy clothes fest or do you avoid it like the plague and stay classy?

We're repping for Moromini!

This week brought some very exciting news!   Brand Repping is a big thing on Instagram.  We've repped for a few brands over the last couple of years.  This year I took a step back from all the brand repping.  Sometimes it can be rather soulless, the entering of rep searches, the way it can make you feel if you don't get picked, the way it feels if you keep seeing the same people being picked over and over.  It all gets a little bit... I'm not sure.  I was feeling jaded by it.

There's so much I love about Instagram.  There's a lovely community there and I feel I've made life long friends there.  I enjoy seeing what others are up to and I enjoy seeing amazing quality photos there.  Snapshots of life.  I didn't feel I wanted to keep "chasing" something that wasn't necessarily bringing me happiness. So. A step back from entering rep searches.  Until I spotted a brand I love, Moromini, searching for reps a couple of weeks ago.  And I just couldn't resist.  Rather like repping for Slugs & Snails tights in the last year, I knew this brand would be a perfect fit for us.  Bright, colourful, full of patterns, clothes the boys and I genuinely like.  Encouraged by Anna who owns Funky Little People to enter, I did.  This Monday the lucky reps were announced and we were among them!  It made me grin from ear to ear.  It will bring me nothing but joy to work alongside a brand we love and I can't wait to help them out sharing photos on Instagram, Twitter and over here.  I believe brand repping should be a joy.  Not something you do because you want some kind of "InstaFame" or just because you are desperate for "free" clothes (they aren't free though.  This is an exchange of clothing for your time, skills and audience).  I am so proud we will be working with a Mama created brand with a wonderful ethos, Europe made clothing, organic cloth, designed with children in mind, not mini adults.

I can tell this is going to be a wonderful partnership and I'm very happy to have some cool Mama's and kids repping alongside us, not in the least Hannah from Make, Do & Push!  High five missus!

The boys' Saturday Style

I am an avid clothing lover.  I love clothes and accessories for myself and the boys.  I usually can't wait to make a few choice purchases from Beau Loves, BoBo Choses & Mini Rodini every season.  But I have to be honest.  AW16 sees me strapped for cash.  Or, if I'm honest, less likely to rack up debt just to have the latest styles.  I find it hard. Rationalising my desire to buy them some gorgeous items from the new collections against knowing that it's expensive and they probably don't "need" them.  The urge to click is strong... and the design is strong this season too..  The deer print from Mini Rodini and the whole of the Beau Loves collection.. it's got me twitching my finger over the "at to shopping cart" button..  So far, I have resisted.

This means the boys are rocking much the same stuff they have all year long.  It's not exactly a hardship.  My boys have heaps of clothes.  Like a crazy amount.  The have wardrobes bursting at the doors and draws that really don't like closing or opening.  It does make it difficult for blogging about their clothes though.  So.. Today, I'm not sharing new styles or clothes with you.  I'm just sharing how we're mixing them up.  And I happen to think the boys still look pretty awesome!

Handmade kids leather shoes - What's new with Belle & The Bear

When Felix was a baby I got heavily into handmade leather moccasins.  I loved finding new small brands mostly run by WAHMs who were putting their hearts and souls into these gorgeous little shoes. There's something about baby shoes, isn't there.  I especially loved buying ones that I wouldn't mind saving.

As Felix got older, he continued to wear leather moccasins, often as his main shoes. Even out and about.  Whilst they don't have a hard sole they are very heard wearing shoes and research has shown it's good for developing feet to be as free from constraints as possible.  It's better for their development.  Obviously I wouldn't let him walk around in them if there was any danger on the pavement from glass or similar, but for most situations, they were perfect for him! I found them invaluable at playgroup. They were perfect for running around the hall but were soft enough I didn't have to worry about him crushing a baby's arm as he absentmindedly played with the toy cars.

Felix is three now and most people who make these beautiful shoes don't go up to his size.  This is quite a source of upset for me.  I loved those shoes.  And I think even though they wouldn't be right for him to wear outside of the house nowadays, they would make the perfect slippers.  I have all of his old pairs and I treasure them.

I am aware though that all these lovely shoe makers are still out there and there are still heaps of you who would love to buy their wears.  As such, I thought today I would feature one of my favorite online stores, Belle & The Bear,  Belle & The Bear are US based but their moccasins still come in at around the same price as UK ones, postage included.  I do try to buy from the UK where I can but I'm not apposed to not doing so.  It's still, in this case, supporting a small parent run business!

Belle & The Bear have a few new styles so I thought I'd feature them today.  First up is the retro & reminiscent of our own childhood days T Bar Strap shoes:

Handmade Leather Moccasins Shoes Kids Shoes

Handmade Leather Moccasins Shoes Kids Shoes

I love them in the gunmetal, makes them a little more modern.  I know Felix would love these if they came in his size because he's got a pair of what he calls "school shoes" which are T-Bar and he chooses them more than any others at the moment! These are available in other colours too including a gorgeous yellow.  These shoes are $44.

Second up are these beautiful boots:

Handmade Leather Moccasins Shoes Kids Shoes

I don't think even I could quite get away with these on Felix.  And to be honest, I don't think he's much of a bow fan.  But I do think they are beautiful.  They look soft, easy to pull on but look like they'd have good staying power on little feet,  Always a plus!  These come in at $55.

It's fair to say that these shoes aren't cheap.  But having bought from Belle & The Bear in the past I can confirm they are fantastic quality,  The leather is great quality.  The attention to detail and quality of the work is without fault.  They last.  They would last more than one child too.  I love them.

Duns it right (again)

If you've read my blog for a while, you'll know that I love Scandi kids clothes.  In fact, my love of Scandi brands is one of the reasons I started the blog!  Back then it was Katvig, Molo, Plastisock and a few others.  I still love those, but I have to say that season upon season, Duns are my go to favorite for an appropriate print.

Duns are always eye catching.  And unisex.  Something I love.  I have two boys but I love that they can share their clothes regardless and they can be passed on to boys and girls alike.  Like all the other brands, Duns bring out a S/S range and A/W range.  For me, the best A/W print out there goes to them.  What says September/Autumn to you?  Autumnal colours, that's for sure.. leaves?  But how about the conker?  Everyone loves conkers! Amusing to find, fun to collect, a favorite toy throughout the generations.  I was ecstatic to see the conker print Duns created.  It's so bold and gorgeous.

I bought Felix a long sleeved top from Funky Little People and myself the age 12 top (which fits perfectly, maybe even a smidge too big).  You know I love a bit of twinning.  They look brilliant.  Felix has worn his every few days.  As always it's washing brilliantly.  Anna from Funky Little People also stocks this print in a single bedding set and I can't tell you how much I want it.  I am truly in love.

Papu - clothes for Mama and Child!

The twinning thing... sometimes it's a bit cheesy.. but I have to admit I do like being a bit matchy with my boys at times.  Why?  Well, let's face it, they are unlikely to want to wear anything like what their Mama wears for very long, are they!  I think it also has a lot to do with the fact that I quite like kids clothes myself. As an adult, I've always worn children's clothing,  Hopefully not in a "to look like a child" kind of way.  No.  What I mean is I'm a shorty. and often I've found that clothing made for a 12/13 year old girl often fits me just fine.  And it can save money too.  A lot of what is made for women is also made for teen girls and if I can buy a pair of leggings that fit me better and cost less, why not?  I think if you shop carefully there's no need for you to look like you're 13!

Still, what I like even better is when a clothing brand caters for adults as well as the kids.  This seems to be happening more and more these days, especially with Scandinavian clothing brands, which I love anyway.  Brands like Duns/More Than A Fling, Moromin & Danefae sell clothing for women.  Some different to their kids stuff but a lot of it just adult sized versions of the same stuff.

A brand I find do an amazing job of it though, are Papu.  Papu are relatively new to the UK market. In fact, they are relatively new in general.   A Finnish brand, they describe themselves thus:

"Papu is about graphic unisex prints, certified organic cotton, flexible sizes and brave design.

The foundation for Papu is collaboration, transparency, sustainability and good spirit. Papu product design is based on high-quality, ecological materials and durability. The combination sizes grow with the children and the products have adjustable features. Papu clothing is produced in Europe and have OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certificate."

I must admit that it is important to me to buy sustainable OEKO-Tex standard clothes where I can.  Or if I can't I try to buy second hand.  I don't like to think of others suffering for the cloth on my back.
How to look like a twit despite a cool dress
What of the clothes themselves then?  Well, the prints are bold.  There's a wonderful selection to choose from from their SS16 collection.  They are the kind of clothes that will look wonderful for a long time, both quality and style wise.  Myself and the boys have a selection of their clothes and I can reassure you that they wash excellently.  They haven't bobbled up or faded.  The boys and I all have matching leggings.  The boys have several tops and I have 3 dresses and two hats.  The hats are just adorable.  The dresses wash wonderfully.  I would say the sizing is generous.  I have small or extra small and they aren't clingy.  I can honestly say they are some of the most comfortable dresses I own and when I wear them friends always comment on them.  The patterns aren't totally outlandish but they do get you noticed.  In a good way! One of the dresses I have is plain black but has really statement sleeves.  I love details like that on clothing.  Not in your face but still a little
different.

Personally, I find the leggings we all have very flattering! Ethan loves the hooded top he has.  It's snug and whilst mostly black, it has patterned material on the inside of the hood and a cute button detail.

Hello and Happy New Year! 2016! Wow, the years sound so futuristic now. You can even ride on a hoverboard.  What's that about?!

I hope you all had wonderful Christmases.  It was good here.  Rushed past as ever.  A blur of family, friends, gifts and food.  Always over too quickly and now we're back to the daily grind.  But that's OK.  I don't mind really!  In fact, we're currently having our kitchen ripped out and replaced so it's all a bit hectic here!

Thank you to lovely Hannah for hosting our last Funky Kid Friday.  So many wonderful link ups.  In particular I have to give props to Hannah herself.  I loved her post.  Twinning is winning in my book so a big yay!

Mini Rodini Pre SS16 Collection

Sound the horn!! One of my absolute faveorite kids clothing brands, Mini Rodini has just released a small pre SS16 collection.. and it includes a unicorn print!!

Fancy a look?

Mini Rodini Pre SS16

Mini Rodini Pre SS16 Unicorn

This is just a selection.  Unicorns - such a good choice.  I don't know anyone who doesn't like a unicorn print.  I think it's great to have a more unisex unicorn print as well.  My two love unicorns but so many clothes that have them on are unbearably pink and glittery.  I'm going to order one of the jumpers!

I love the bold orange and black spot print.  It's simple but a real statement.  The bag looks gorgeous but I love it on the clothes as well!

You can shop the collection over at Mini Rodini's online store but I also know that Scout & Co Kids have some of the Pre SS16 collection in stock.  Just in time for Christmas! The perfect Christmas Day outfit, don't you think ;-)

Another week has rolled by - where does the time go?  Welcome along to another Funky Kid Friday hosted by myself and Hannah from Make, Do & Push.

I can't tell you how lovely it is to see more people linking up again. Really warms my heart!  It does make picking a favorite outfit from the previous week a bit harder though!  Last week I adored the cute bear knit Mummy & The Bubbas' Jacob was wearing.  Paired with his monochrome cloud leggings from Fred & Noah and the brown boots - spot on!

Felix styled by Felix

My boys are quite into their clothes.  Not all that surprising, really!  Mostly, I choose their clothes for them just to save time, especially on weekdays - well, Ethan has to wear school uniform, but for Felix.  It saves us time in the morning if I've chosen his outfit the night before.  However, this week, Felix picked his own clothes on Thursday morning and I think he did a lovely job!

Lucky, I'm not afraid to mix patterns at all.  Felix chose himself two items and they both happen to be from one of our favorite Insta shops, Shop Haute.  Shop Haute is one of the first kids clothing brands I found on Insta.  They are based in Hawaii, a WAHM brand.  The prices are great, the clothes are lovely, excellent quality.  We still love them two years on!

Clothes Wishlists from Sammy Dress

Don't you love it when you stumble across a bargain site?  Sammydress is just that!  I must admit that the name of the site threw me a bit but they stock a bit of everything.  Not just clothes.  But let's face it, I love clothes over here, so I thought I'd put together a wishlist - one for the boys and one for me!

The Boys Wishlist:

1) Elephant jumper $7.19

Felix in particular loves Elephants so I was thinking of him when I picked this top.  It'd look brilliant paired with his elephant leggings from Fred & Noah.

2) Bear Christmas Jumper $12.69

Christmas jumpers!  I get the boys new ones every year.  At least one.  Sometimes more!  We're quite into festive wear in our house - even the hubby has a few Christmas jumpers.  The boys like to wear Christmassy clothing for the whole of December.  So do I actually.  This bear is cute, I think either or both of them would happily wear it - twinning is winning!

3) Tribal print joggers $9.15

These joggers would go well with loads of tops the boys have.  Grey is a great colour.  Love the details as well.

4) Bird print gilet $14.13

Love the print on this gilet.  Unisex as well in my book.  Felix loves any animals and birds fascinate him so I chose this with him in mind.

My Wish List:

1) Merry Christmas Home Alone Jumper $8.69

Home Alone is one of our favorite Christmas films.  If I'm honest, the boys ask to watch the Home Alone films all year long.  This is a line that we quote to each other all the time!

2) Lace Dress $10.99

There's something classic and Audrey Hepburn about this dress.  I'd love to wear it out over Christmas.  Maybe even Christmas Day at home.  I like to wear a dress on Christmas day.  I would say New Years Eve but let's face it, I'm not going out for NYE!!  Love the lace detailing and the neckline would be flattering!

3) Mama elephant jumper $5.99

If Felix is going to wear elephants, I should too, right?  I like the image on this one.  Mama and baby elephant.  It's so cute!

4) Cape Coat $13.31

Cape coats have been popular for a few seasons and I don't think they are going away.  They look great over big jumpers and you can get away with quite a few layers or thick jumpers under them.  I love the colour on this one, it'll go with everything.  They just look classic!

So, bargains galore, I'm sure you'll agree!  What would you pick?

Standing out from the crowd!

Don't you just love it when you order something online and it arrives less than 24 hours later!  Last week I wrote about Five Boys Clothing and the fantastic trousers I'd ordered from there.  Well, they arrived in int he post early Saturday morning and Ethan wanted to get them on straight away!

I've bought Boys & Girls clothing for quite a long time now.  In fact, they were one of my first blog sponsors!  Their clothes never disappoint.  These trousers certainly don't.  They look amazing on.  Ethan remarked on how soft they are.  They have pockets which he loves.  There's absolutely nothing negative you can say about them.  They are age 5-6 and Ethan is over 6 now so I suppose you could say they come up a big large.  But then Ethan is quite diddy.

Something else Ethan was rocking over the weekend was his brilliant bunny dungarees from Polish/Irish brand Famstyle.  I bought them a little while ago but they got a bit misplaced during our move so we only rediscovered them recently.  When I found them Ethan said "What are those cute clothes?  I want to wear them all weekend!".  Bless him.  He loves the cute bunny face.  I like that they are unisex and something a bit different.  Why shouldn't a boy wear a bunny?  He looked lovely and found them great for romping around in.
